Private Label vs White Label Sportswear

A side-by-side comparison of private label and white label sportswear manufacturing, and how to pick the right model for your stage.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe two genuinely different sourcing models with different cost structures, risks and ceilings.

Definitions

White label means buying a garment the factory already makes and stocks, then applying your logo. The product is available to anyone.

Private label means the factory manufactures to your specification, under your brand, using patterns and materials assigned to your programme.

When white label is the right call

You are testing a market, running a one-off event or club order, or bundling apparel alongside a different core business. Speed and low commitment matter more than uniqueness.

When private label wins

You intend to build a repeat-purchase brand. Fit becomes your moat, and fit is impossible to own on a shared stock garment. Private label also protects you from a competitor selling the identical product at a lower price.

The hybrid approach

Many growing brands run both: white label accessories and basics to keep the catalogue full, private label on the two or three hero styles that define the brand.

How to switch models without disruption

  1. Identify your top reordering styles from at least two seasons of data
  2. Have the factory pattern-match the existing fit so returning customers see no change
  3. Upgrade fabric one step, not three, so the price move stays defensible
  4. Keep white label running until the private label bulk lands

Frequently asked questions

Is private label more expensive than white label?
Per unit, usually yes, because pattern work, custom trims and dedicated fabric add cost. Total programme cost can be similar once you factor in the higher sell-through and pricing power that a differentiated product supports.
Can I move from white label to private label later?
Yes, and most brands do. Use white label to validate demand, then reinvest into custom blocks and fabrics once you know which styles reorder.
Which model has lower minimum order quantities?
White label, almost always. Stock garments can ship in dozens, whereas private label typically starts at 50-100 pieces per style per colour.
